Free-flowing collaboration, improved information sharing, greater coordination and faster response times, all set to be delivered by the new Tweed Heads Marine Centre.

The multi purpose facility was today opened by Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight Melinda Pavey and Member for Tweed Geoff Provest.

Mrs Pavey said the Tweed is a high volume waterway that caters for a variety of recreational activities as well as commercial fishing and charter fleets. Sharing the one location provides the boating community with better customer service and safety reassurance.

“The facility is the new home for safety officers from Roads and Maritime Services, NSW Police Force Marine Area Command and inspectors from the Department of Primary Industry – Fisheries.”

“Following a trial in 2016 involving officers from each agency, we saw benefits of increased compliance capability in the area and increased offshore patrols between Byron Bay and Tweed due to additional available officers and vessels,” Mrs Pavey said.

  • The world class two-storey building, includes open plan workspace, meeting rooms, interview room, seized evidence room, secure weapons room, boat ramp and two jetties
  • A new fuel bowser allowing safe refueling in-situ, rather than using hand-held jerry cans
  • 15 staff, previously divided between Tweed Heads and Coffs Harbour, will be under the same roof
  • Each agency will retain their respective vessels. There will be no reduction in number.

Member for Tweed Geoff Provest welcomed the new Centre, saying the Tweed community would benefit from a more coordinated approach between the agencies.

“This area has seen significant increases in boating patronage in recent years, having a facility that encourages these agencies to work together, will deliver improved services on our waterways, something the community has been asking for some time,” Mr Provest said.

A regional education and compliance campaign aimed at introducing the joint approach to waterway users will be carried out later this month. Roads and Maritime Services will provide the community with details in advance of this operation once they have been finalised.
