Major works have started on a $12.1 million upgrade which will improve traffic flow at the intersection of Lanyon Drive and Tompsitt Drive in Jerrabomberra, near Queanbeyan.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Michael McCormack said the upgrade would ease congestion on a main commuter route between NSW and the ACT.

“Around Australia, the Liberal and Nationals’ Government is investing to bust congestion to help people get home sooner and safer,” Mr McCormack said.

“This is an intersection which sees heavy congestion in the morning and afternoon peaks. The installation of traffic lights will ensure traffic moves freely, and the intersection will service future demand.”

Deputy Premier, Minister for Regional NSW and Member for Monaro John Barilaro said the project would improve travel time for those who commute between NSW and the ACT.

“Once complete it will help to keep traffic moving through the intersection and cater to the future growth in population in and around Queanbeyan,” Mr Barilaro said.

“Anyone who has travelled through this intersection will know how congested it can become during the morning and evening peak, so it’s great to see major work underway.”

NSW Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight Melinda Pavey said the intersection was located on one of the major access routes into the ACT from NSW and used by thousands of motorists daily.

“Work involves replacing the existing roundabout with traffic lights, and is a great example of how the Australian and NSW Governments are working together to deliver major works for local communities. Installing traffic lights at this intersection will improve traffic flow for motorists who travel through it at peak times and provide better facilities for pedestrians and cyclists,” Mrs Pavey said.

Senator for New South Wales Jim Molan said the project complemented other Australian Government-funded infrastructure investments in the region.

“We are investing in the Ellerton Drive Extension, upgrades to the Monaro Highway, the Charleyong Bridge Replacement at Marlowe – all with the goal of getting motorists and freight operators to their destinations more smoothly and safely,” Senator Molan said.

“The Lanyon Drive and Tompsitt Drive Intersection Upgrade is expected to be completed by late 2019, weather permitting.”
