The NSW Government has completed eight new social housing units in a modern, high-quality development for members of the Newcastle community.

Minister for Water, Property and Housing, Melinda Pavey said the $2.83 million Shortland development also created 14 much-needed jobs during construction.

“We have replaced two ageing fibro houses with improved housing that will provide a comfortable and safe home for up to 12 new residents,” Mrs Pavey said.

“In addition, the project was specifically designed with three separate façade frontages which appear like detached homes and therefore complement the surrounding low density streetscape.”

The two-storey development on Macarthur Street has four one-bedroom units and four two-bedroom units, with six parking spaces.

The project is well-located opposite Cook Park and six minutes’ walk to a bus stop with services to the university and city centre.

Minister Pavey said the development forms part of the NSW Government’s $400 million Fast Track Housing Construction Package, which will deliver almost 1,300 new social homes across the State, supporting an estimated 800 direct and 1,200 indirect jobs during construction.

“We are fast-tracking projects to get shovels in the ground faster, sustaining critically important jobs in construction and across the wider NSW economy while delivering new fit-for-purpose homes for disadvantaged people,” Minister Pavey said.

The housing renewals are part of the NSW Government’s Future Directions for Social Housing, a 10-year plan to build more and better social homes that blend in with local communities. https://www.dpie.nsw.gov.au/land-and-housing-corporation
